Start, stop, reset, and open the console
Day-to-day power control and the web console live on the Cloud Pool VM list and on each VM's detail page.
Power actions
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Start | Powers the VM on |
| Stop | Powers the VM off (anything running is interrupted) |
| Reset | Forcibly restarts without a clean shutdown — like pressing reset |
From the pool list
- Open Compute → Cloud pools → your pool → Virtual machines.
- Use the row icons: play/stop, console, and the ⋮ menu for Reset (and Destroy).
From the VM detail page
- Open a VM.
- Use Web Console and the Actions menu (Start / Stop / Reset, plus Serial Console when available).
Stop and reset ask for confirmation. Start does not.
Power changes are queued. Refresh after a few seconds if the status badge has not updated.
Web console
The Web Console opens a browser-based graphical console in a popup window so you can interact with the guest as if you were at a local keyboard and display.
- Open the VM (or use the console icon on the pool list).
- Click Web Console (or the monitor icon).
- Allow popups for the portal if your browser blocks the window.
Use the console when:
- SSH is not configured yet
- The guest network is down
- You need recovery or boot-time interaction
- You are finishing first-boot on a firewall appliance (see Create a firewall VM in a Cloud Pool)
Serial console
Some VMs also offer Serial Console under Actions. Prefer the graphical console unless you specifically need serial output.
Connection details
On the VM Dashboard tab you will also see connection-oriented details (addresses, identifiers) once the VM has finished creating. Use those with your SSH client or other tools outside the portal.
Tips
- Stopped VMs still consume pool quota (CPU/RAM/disk reservation) until you destroy them.
- Reset is hard — prefer a clean shutdown from inside the guest when possible, then Start again if needed.
- If the console popup is blank, check browser popup blockers and try again after the VM reports running.
Still stuck?
Open a support ticket from Support → Tickets if power actions stay pending, the console never connects, or status shows as stale for an extended period.
